A Little Bit of This and a Little Bit of That
The month of March has been very exciting for BJH Foundation. Its first summit, “Jews Growing Older in the Carolinas: A Conversation” was attended by many from North and South Carolina at Temple Emanuel on March 29. The next edition of Shalom Greensboro will include a summary of all the important information shared.
BJH Foundation’s mission is to “Enhance the lives of older Jewish adults in North and South Carolina” by awarding grants to other nonprofit organizations providing programs and services to this special population. BJH Foundation wants to help with today’s needs, but also looks ahead 5 or 10 years, learning where specific areas of need will exist. As baby boomers enter the older Jewish adult population, the needs are changing. The tricky part is understanding what, where and how the needs will be met.
BJH Foundation surveyed current and past grant recipient organizations. Each recipient organization encounters different needs, provides different services and programs to the older Jewish adult population. Grants funded by BJH Foundation support many of these needs.
The survey results provided insight into the current and future needs of the older Jewish adult population. Some of those needs are currently addressed with programs and services provided by various organizations including Jewish Community Centers, Jewish Family Services, Jewish Federations, Temples, Synagogues, and other nonprofit organizations throughout North and South Carolina.
At the summit the survey results were shared. The event provided everyone an opportunity to network, share information about what works best in their community and how to implement various programs.
The summit also provided valuable information for the grant allocation process. The dedicated group on the BJH Foundation grant allocation committee are working hard to help many older Jewish adults in North and South Carolina by awarding grants to nonprofit organizations providing services for the benefit of this special population. The 2017 Grant Recipients will be announced in June!
There are many ways grants can enhance the lives of the older Jewish adult population. BJH Foundation grants focus on two priority categories for older Jewish adults: Health and Wellness, and Socialization programs.
Health and Wellness programs include: case management with a licensed professional or case worker, congregational nurse, dementia or memory impairment, group day care and respite programs, new and innovative programs.
Socialization programs include: community building, education and furtherance of Jewish values, food distribution, transportation, new and innovative programs.
